Sports Reporter Profile

University of Tennessee Indoor Football Complex

For my Journalism 375 class, we were tasked the spotlighting that group in the media that does’t get recognized all the time- the Sports Reporter.

I chose to do mine on my friend, Sara Mitchell, who is a Vol Reporter. Anytime I can show off how awesome this girl is, I do. Sara took me behind the scenes of a UT Football practice.

She was working on a story about the Student-Athletic Trainers of the team. She got me in the indoor football field and then into the Student Athlete Wellness Center.

I followed her around as she shot b-roll of the football players getting taped up and stretched for practice.

Not only were pounds upon pounds of tape being applied to ankles and hands, but other athletes were also having physical therapy done.

1471135_10152067320106285_789038066_nIt was interesting to see how the athletes were prepared for practice, however, Sara was even more impressive. She knew almost everyone in the building and they knew her.

Due to a high demand of videoing equipment, i was forced to do something i had never done before. I had to shoot her profile using a GoPro. It was definitely a learning experience. Without a view finder or screen, I had no way of knowing how my shots were turning out. I also had no way of knowing how the sound was coming out, so you could say i was nervous. After editing the film, I am happy with the end result. I, however, will not be shooting another interview with a GoPro for a while to come.

Thanks so much Sara for all your help!

Homecoming in Retrospect

All Campus Events committee 2013 prior to the Homecoming Game

UT Homecoming 2013 is a wrap! All the trophies and crowns have been awarded and now the particpating organizations and ACE can breathe a sigh of relief.

Hours upon hours of work was poured into the week of Homecoming. The participating organizations might have been working towards winning the big trophy, but in fact they were doing something greater.

They were reminding alumnae of why they loved UT and the memories they made here. Because this was nostalgic time for alums, UT picked the perfect opportunity for Big Orange Give. The goal was to raise $125,000 in 125 hours. Not only did UT meet that goal but they surpassed it and i would like to the think Homecoming helped in this accomplishment. Whether that is true or not, don’t know, but we will just say it is for now.

One of the Top 3 Smokey’s Howl groups performing during the Halftime of the Basketball Game

For some UT Basketball fans, ACE forced them to be a part of one event. This year we held our Smokey’s Howl finals during the halftime of the exhibition basketball game. Thanks to UT Athletics and a few ACE members, it ran so smoothly and was a hit. I hope we could make this a tradition for years to come.

The actual football game was a blur for me. I was watching the clock for the time i could go onto the field and get the trophies out of the tunnels. At halftime the score was Auburn 34- Tennessee 20.

Neyland Stadium during the 2013 Homecoming Game

Halftime was a whirl wind between dodging the band and its 300+ alums, corralling about 35 Homecoming Directors, lining up 10 Homecoming Court Candidates with parents, managing 30 ACE members. Amongst all the madness i almost forgot to stop and appreciate where I was standing. I was on the Shields-Watkins field in Neyland Stadium. Not very many people can say they have done this not just once but 4 times. I could not believe that this could be the last time I was going to be on the field. Looking from the field up into the ea of orange, truly makes you proud to be a Vol.

After halftime we had to return to our seats, i was still in shock it was over. I was shocked, but just as equally thankful that this experience was over. Running Homecoming yet again this year was a trying experience, but one I would not change.

The Vols ran back on to the field for the second half of the game. Even though try as they might, the Vols were over taken by the Tigers, 55-23. Even though we lost, I was still proud of our Vols. They hung with another ranked team during the first half and never lost their heart as the walls seemed to be closing in on another UT victory.

My co-chair and myself celebrating the conclusion of Homecoming 2013

I am also proud of the ACE committee and the help they gave me and my ch-chair. As well as, all the participating organizations and homecoming court candidates for their hard work in participation of our event. Without you, our events would cease to exist. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to yet again plan one of the greatest traditions at UT. Homecoming will always hold a special place in my heart right next to UT.

K is for Karma and Kiffin

The word most used in Rocky Top to categorize Lane Kiffin’s termination as the USC Head Football Coach was karma. Especially when you consider the way he announced his leaving the UT Football program for USC’s.

From the thrown together press conference to the brief statement with no questions taken. Not to mentioned his disheveled appearance. This announcement came just weeks before National Signing Day. In a 1 minute press conference, Lane Kiffin single-handedly set the UT football program back at the least 5 years.

As the USC Head Football Coach, Kiffin was all hype. A No. 1 preseason ranking in 2012, deflated footballs, swapped jerseys, poor media relations, and, most notably, a bunch of losses crippled the once national-title contender. Finishing the season with a 7-5 record.

After a terrible showing (on and off the field) in a bowl game against Georgia Tech, USC earned the notorious distinction of becoming the first team to ever begin a season ranked No. 1 only to end it unranked. Because of this, Kiffin’s position was no longer safe with USC. And last weekend the team lost to Arizona State in a big way, Pat Haden fired him before they made it back to California.

Karma is a bitch

Lane Kiffin is, who he’s always been, and probably always will be. Which is why Lane Kiffin didn’t get fired from USC for his 28-15 record.

Lane Kiffin got fired from USC for being Lane Kiffin. Finally someone other than a UT fan saw right through his “charisma”.

Sweetest sound to a UT’s fan ears, beside Rocky Top! Go Vols!

Peyton Manning, UT’s Rockstar QB

As the University of Tennessee Football Team comes off of an impressive win over Western Kentucky this weekend; one of the university’s most prized alums as been proven great once again.

According to utsports.com, Peyton Manning has been named AFC Offensive Player of the Week. This is the 24th time in his career that Peyton has received this award. This award gives him more conference player of the week awards than any other player in NFL history. The win over the Baltimore Ravens, recorded Peyton with 464 passing yards which is the 2nd highest in his career.

All the tweets and posts by Vol Football fans about Peyton’s most recent success, just goes to show how much of an impact he has had on this University. Not only does he have his pictures everywhere around the athletic facilities, but a road and classroom  both sport his name.  Not too shabby, ehh?

Even though he has been graduated for a little while it is still apparent that he is and always will be our rockstar quarterback. As Vol Football fans we may not always be confident in our quarterback, but we will always have Peyton Manning.

I love a good meme. Go Vols!
